Going Abroad Roadmap

Step 1: Complete your Globalplacement profile

You’ve decided to go abroad for an internship, but first things first. In order for us to find an internship that matches your requirements and preferences, we need to know who you are and what you want to do.

Sign up to Globalplacement and complete your profile. Once your profile is complete you should also add your CV and a generalised motivation letter. In your motivation letter you can tell us who you are and what you would like to achieve during your internship – and of course why you want to go abroad.

Make sure that you are presenting yourself properly in these documents, because these will be used to find an internship for you. Host organizations will see these prior to an interview to determine whether they would like to consider recruiting you for the internship.

Important: Don’t forget to add any requirements for your internship to your Globalplacement profile as well. If your school or university has any requirements, be sure to mention those so that we can make sure our proposals match your criteria. You can also write down any preferences that we will take into account when looking for an internship for you.

Step 2: Choose your destination and apply

Now that your Globalplacement profile is complete and your documents (CV, motivation letter) are ready, it is time for you to choose your destination. Every country and city is unique so take your time to read our brochures about the individual qualities of each location. Inspire yourself and choose wisely as this is the first step to starting your adventure abroad.

Once you’ve made a decision, apply for your package of choice on Globalplacement. Once you apply, a Globalplacement employee will be in contact guide you through the process.

Step 3: Pre-Screening, Agreement & Application fee

After receiving your application a Globalplacement employee will assess the information you provide. We will review your profile and motivation so we may evaluate the possibilities of an internship abroad in the country of destination with the given requirements and preferences.

After screening your application a Globalplacement employee will contact you by phone (or e-mail if we’re unable to reach you). We will go through your application to make sure everything is in order and provide you with an agreement and an invoice for the application fee.

The application fee (€ 250,-) proves that you are serious about an internship abroad and we will provide you with high quality service to help you find an internship abroad. In the unfortunate circumstance that we are unable to find an internship for you, without you being at fault (see agreement), the entire application fee is returned to you.

Step 4: Internship Agreement

Once you have returned a signed copy of the agreement and we have received the application fee, our search for your internship abroad will begin!

Depending on your destination, Globalplacement or our partners abroad will start looking for a qualified internship for you. As soon as we have found an internship that meets your requirements and preferences, we will set up an interview between you and the host organization.

The search duration for an internship differs per case, but we’ll always do our best to find you an internship as soon as possible. If we are unable to find an internship within 12 weeks, we will completely refund the application fee.

During the interview you can agree upon the duration and contents of your internship. It’s also your responsibility to secure any remuneration for the internship. Upon the success of an interview an internship agreement will be set up which must be signed by the host organization, your school/university and you.

In some cases your school/university might require the host organization to sign their agreement as well. Make sure that this agreement is adjusted to an internship in a foreign country. Remove (with approval from your school/university) any sections about insurance and remuneration. You are responsible for your school’s/university’s approval so make sure that everything is in order before signing the internship agreement.

Step 5: Payment & Final go

Once you have secured your internship by signing the internship agreement we will issue an invoice with the program fee. The program fee depends on your choice of destination. Once we have received your program fee payment you will get the final go and it is time for you to prepare yourself for an internship abroad!

If you also applied for an accommodation service, we will also issue an invoice for this service.

Step 6: Preparations

Now that your internship has been secured, it’s time to prepare yourself. Preparing to go abroad consists out of the follow steps:

  1. Apply for your visa (if required)
If a visa is required, Globalplacement or our partner will help you with your visa request. However, getting a visa is your responsibility.
  2. Read our manual: An internship abroad
Our manual gives you more information about doing an internship abroad. Read it carefully and be prepared!
  3. Book your plane ticket
Make sure you book your plane ticket on time – don’t wait and book last minute or you might miss the start date.
  4. Get insured
When going abroad it’s important that you get insured. Make sure that you get travel insurance and liability insurance before going abroad.
