Application tips and tricks for students

On this page you can find useful tips and advices for writing your CV (curriculum vitae) and application letter. Not only are there many international placements available nowadays, many different application procedures apply for different countries. Therefore, some international companies only ask for the applicant's CV and cover letter, while other companies also ask for a reference and essay.

Even though the application letter and CV mostly contain the same elements, there are some differences between them. The CV generally lists all your skills and competences, while the motivational letter explains how these skills can be of use for the internship company. Furthermore, your cover letter emphasizes your unique qualities and shows your interest in the internship company. In essence, the CV is shortly written, stacked information, while the application letter explains the applicant's competences in more detail.

You can find an example of a cover letter and CV below. You can also find recommendations on how to prepare for your application interview.

Application letters

The aim of writing an application letter is to get to be invited for a job interview. It is also a good preparation to your job interview, since the letter is the first step of profiling yourself for a company. This first impression is crucial to pass the first phase of the application process.

Curriculum Vitae

The average time a recruiter looks at your résumé is only 30 to 60 seconds. They look at mistakes (like type mistakes and wrong grammar, etc) as well as at your points that might draw their attention, as a result of which they look longer at your qualifications. Here are a few points how you can ensure that you can keep the attention of a recruiter, and with that to increase the chance to be invited for a job interview.

Job interview

An application is the best opportunity to show that you are clever and energetic, exactly the person that a company wants to hire. That’s why it is very important that you prepare well before you have your job interview. You can be a bit nervous for an application, but when you are well prepared you can use the adrenalin as an advantage. So you can show your best side and get the internship of your dreams.
